| Vintage bronze Saru, or monkey, sculpture with original box, recently imported directly from Japan. The sculpture bares two identical signature marks, one on the bottom and one near the base on the back. The overall detailing and quality of this piece is exquisite. Unfortunately, I am unable to translate the signature or the kanji written on the box. However, I have it on good authority that the sculpture dates to the mid-Showa period, probably early 1950's. There are dated kanji on the back of the box lid which appear to have been written in around 1969. However, they are not original ink and probably indicate that the item was given as a gift at that time. The sculpture measures roughly 10 inches tall by 8 inches in diameter at the widest point. The box measures 11 1/2 inches tall, 9 inches deep and 8 inches wide. | |||||||||||||||
