Breathtaking lacquered isho-dansu, or clothing chest, dating to the Meiji-period (late 1800's). This piece originates from the Yonezawa Prefecture, a region noted for excellent quality lacquered tansu. Each section of this chest measures 22 1/2" tall by 43" wide by 17 1/2" tall, and combine to make a large and impressive chest. The drawer fronts are thick, beautifully grained keyaki (zelkova), finished with a warm, orange-red lacquer. The working lock plates are large, yet subtle and finely detailed, and the chest has all three of the original keys, one for the top two drawers, one for the larger bottom drawers, one a final key for the hinged door on the bottom section, which exposes two hidden drawers. The case is black lacquered matsu , or pine, with natural sugi (Japanese cedar) drawer cases. This item is in good to excellent condition, showing only the most minor of flaws and wear and tear. The case has some vertical splits on the sides and back, and the top shows some signs of checking or splitting, but the hardware and drawer faces are in absolutely stunning condition. A true collector's item.
