Antique Japanese tansu clothing chest, dating to the late Meiji-Period (c.1900). This compact chest features two full-width drawers, with cast-iron handles and decorative cast-iron lockplates. Originally the top half of a two stacking isho-dansu, a clothing chest often given as a bridal gift, this tansu is both beautiful and functional. It has been thoroughly cleaned and waxed to a deep reddish brown, and is in excellent condition. In the tradition of fine Japanese furniture craftsmanship, it is solidly constructed of hinoki and sugi, subspecies of the cypress family indigenous to Japan. The chest measures 34" wide, 15 1/2" deep and 19" tall.
