Vintage Japanese Joyatorai, a pair of lacquered wood stands or columns from a Buddhist temple in Japan. Each stand measures a little over three feet tall. They feature a tapered hexagonal (six-sided) design, measuring 19 1/2" at the wides point of the base, and 14" at the top. The columns are finished in black lacquer with red trim, and each stand is decorated with mon, or crests on three sides in gold lacquer. There is kanji inscribed on the back panel of each stand, and one has a pull out drawer with angled drawer front. The kanji read, among other things, that the stands were originally constructed in Taisho 14 (1926), and refurbished in Showa 59 (1985). The joyatorai are in good overall condition, though there are a few chips and dulling of the lacquer from age.
