Vintage Japanese ceramic vase, likely designed for use in ikebana flower arrangement. This item dates to the early Showa-Period (c.1950) and hails from the famous Bizen kilns. Bizen earthenware, or yaki, is unglazed, and develops a distinctive bronzed patina that results from the natural wood-fired kilns, which have operated continuously for more than four centuries. This piece is in excellent condition and measures approximately 8" tall and 3 1/2" in diameter at the widest part. There is a continuous vertical seam where the wrapped sheet of clay was jointed, and small ear shaped handles. The web-like spreading out from the top of the seam are evocative of matsu, or pine, instilling a subtle sense of shibui in this lovely vessel.
