Japanese Antique Isho Dansu Nihonmatsu Tansu Chest

Stunning antique Japanese two section clothing tansu chest. Known as "isho dansu", this chest originates from the Nihonmatsu area of northern Japan, a region noted for distinctive, high-quality lacquered furniture. This tansu dates to the late Meiji-Period (c.1900), and is constructed of "sugi" (Japanese Cedar) and "matsu" (pine), and finished with a gorgeous deep red lacquer. The cast-iron handles are solid and excellent quality, with detailed protective plates depicting "sakura", or cherry blossoms and matsu. The lockplates are decorated with depictions of koi fish and are in working order with original key. The keyholes are protected by a rotating plate in the shape of the magic mallet of Daikoku, one of the Seven Lucky Gods (Hichi Fukujin) of Japan. Daikoku is typically the God associated with wealth and agriculture, particularly rice. He is traditionally depicted standing atop two bales of rice, and holding his bag of treasures and his magic mallet, considered to have many mystical powers. This chest is in very good original condition. There is some minimal splitting of the wood on the sides, as is common with tansu of this vintage, and the boards on the back have separated with age. There is a small surface scratch on the upper right corner of the top drawer, which measures roughly 2 1/2" long by 1/4" wide. Each section of the tansu measures 23 3/4 inches tall by 45 1/4" wide by 17 1/4" deep. They may be displayed and used separately or as a single stacked unit. The lower section features a locking hinged door, which houses two small drawers for storing valuables. This superb piece combines the beauty of Japanese craftsmanship with the functionality to be used everyday.
