Single section antique Geta-Bako, a tansu chest commonly placed in the foyer, or genkan, of traditional Japanese homes for storage of shoes. It is the custom in Japan, where grass reed tatami mats often cover the floors, to remove one's shoes upon entering a home. Outside shoes are placed in the tansu during the visit, and slippers or sandals are kept there for indoor use. The tansu measures approximately 38" tall by 34" wide by 14 1/2" deep, and dates to the early Showa-Period (c.1930). The case is constructed of beautifully grained kiri, or paulowia, a wood prized by Japanese craftsmen for its strength, light weight and durability. The tansu is in excellent condition, and has been thoroughly cleaned and waxed to a warm golden hue.
