Classic Shigaraki earthenware storage container. As opposed to the more common tsubo, or vase, vessels of this variety were used to transport sake, shochu, and soy sauce to the ancient capital of Kyoto. This large piece features the classic melon drip glaze with shades of green and blue, a trademark of the Shigaraki style. It is in excellent condition, and dates to the late Meiji-Period (c.1900). In diameter, the vase measures 6 1/2" at the base, 11 inches at the wides point and 6 inches at the rim. It stands 19 1/2 inches tall. The glaze has a crackled finish, and there are a couple of original kiln marks evident. There are no cracks or chips, and lightly tapping the bottom produces a deep resonant tone.
