Vintage Japanese Shigaraki Earthenware Tanuki Pair
Vintage Japanese pair of earthenware sculptures depicting a male and female Tanuki, the mythical raccoon-dog of Japanese folklore. Tanuki is a mischievous character, often associated with good fortune. This quaint couple originate from the Shigaraki region of Japan, famous for its many kilns producing fine earthenware, or yaki. The male figure is depicted in traditional form with his wide rimmed hat and sake tokuri, or wine jug. He measures roughly 7 1/2 inches wide, 6 inches deep and 12 inches tall. The female figure has a charming little bow in her hair, and carries a satchel, possible a picnic lunch for a romantic tete-a-tete. She measures 5 1/2" wide and deep, and stands 9 1/2" tall. The pieces date to the mid Showa-Period (c.1950), and are in excellent condition.
