Stunning Japanese lacquered suzuri-bako, an antique box designed to hold calligraphy items. This beautiful item features a vividly painted peacock (kujaku) perched atop a rocky outcropping, set against a floral background. The primary base color is dark, chocolate brown, and the box and painting are in excellent condition. The suzuri-bako comes complete with its original kiri wood box, bearing the manufacturer's trademark. It dates to the Taisho-Period (1912-1926). The lacquered box measures 10 inches wide, 8 3/4 inches deep, and 1 1/2 inches tall with the lid on. The kiri protective box measures 11 1/4 inches long by 10 inches wide, by 3 inches tall.
