Antique Japanese Shigaraki Earthenware Tsubo Vase
Beautiful Japanese antique earthenware tsubo, or vase, originating from the famous Shigaraki region of Japan. Shigaraki is widely known for producing excellent quality ceramics, often used in traditional tea ceremony or for the storage and transport of food, tea leaves, and sake. This stately tsubo features distinctive ash glaze in warm earth tones. Shades of brown with hints of copper combine with light texturing caused by floating wood ash from the drafts of the kiln. These elements produce a subtle and natural patina epitomizing the Japanese wabi-sabi design aesthetic. This tsubo is in excellent condition, and dates to the late Meiji-Period (c.1900). The vase measures roughly 6 1/2 inches in diameter at the base, flaring out to over 13" diameter at the widest point before tapering down to 6 1/2" at the rim. It stands 16" tall and weighs 15.8 pounds.
