| Antique Seto yaki earthenware storage container. As opposed to the more common tsubo, or vase, vessels of this variety were used to transport sake, shochu, and soy sauce to the ancient capital of Kyoto. This large piece features the a white drip pattern glaze over a background of black. It is in good condition, and dates to the Taisho-Period (1912-1926). In diameter, the vase measures 7 1/4" at the base, 13 inches at the widest point and 7 inches at the rim. It stands 19 inches tall. There is what appears to be an original kilning defect, or birth mark, near the bottom (see enlargement 11 for close-up). Lightly tapping the bottom produces a deep resonant tone. | |||||||||||||||
