Ancient Greek Laconian Pottery column Krater 400 B.C.
A rare ancient Greek Laconian Black glazed pottery Column Krater, dating to the 4th Century B.C. This magnificent Column Krater is of typical form, with short flared foot, acorn shaped body and wide mouth, with broad collar rim. Two thick strap handles divide outwards to form stirrup-like loops, which attach to the shoulder of the Krater. The Krater is a ceremonial piece, likely used for funerary purposes. As such it is fair to assume that the hole in the base is an ancient design feature and not recent damage. An incredible, rare piece. For comparison please see a similar piece which sold at Christies, South Kensington, April 2010 for $5,693 Ancient Laconia was the home of the Spartan state, it played a crucial role in the history of the Peloponnese and wider Greece. Height: 11 1/2 inches. Width: 13 3/4 inches. Condition: Exceptional condition. Unlike the vast majority of genuine ceramics of this size and intricacy, this piece has not been restored from fragments and there are no major restorations. Stable crack around top of one handle, age related encrustation. Provenance: From the Estate of Mrs A. Jacobs, Averill Park, New York. The collection was inherited from Mrs Jacobs Uncle, who is reputed to have acquired this piece in the mid 1970's. ArtAncient Limited has recently acquired the majority of artifacts from this estate, which included ethnographic art, antiquities, oriental porcelain, and sculpture.
