| An exceptional, genuine prehistoric 7-egg Oviraptor Dinosaur nest dating to approximately 75 million years ago. One of the finest fossilized dinosaur egg formations we have ever seen. This is an exceptional piece. A large assemblage containing 7 torpedo shaped eggs within the original nest matrix. Each egg measures about 7 inches long by 2 3/8 inches wide. The eggs are largely intact and without excessive restoration. The nodular shell of the eggs, so often lost, is visible here on most of the eggs with exceptional preservation and without the over preparation common on today's fossil market. The oviraptor was a dinosaur which was closely related to the modern bird: it had a strong toothless beak and possessed feathers on the body, wings, and tail. The dinosaur had a distinctive crest on its head. Oviraptor was almost certainly a meat eating dinosaur - one specimen was found with a lizard in its stomach. It has also been suggested that oviraptors were egg eaters, although undoubtedly its name, which means "egg thief" is totally undeserved and has arisen through a misinterpretation: the original oviraptor skull was discovered in close proximity to a bunch of eggs and the assumption was made that the dinosaur was plundering the eggs from another creature's nest. In fact subsequent scientific investigation proved that the fossilized eggs, which were identical in appearance to the ones sold here, belonged to the oviraptor (a nursing mother)! Dimensions of nest: 14 1/4 by 10 by 5 1/2 inches. Condition: With some minor regluing, most notably on the upslanting egg to one side. One or two minor consolidations. Overall, in exceptional condition. This nest has been left in its original "rough" condition by the previous collector and has not been air-abraded, as is common with fossils that enter the market these days. Provenance: Originally acquired, 1980's. | ||
