Mary Queen of Scots was born in Scotland in 1542. She was well educated in France and spoke French, Latin and English; wrote excellent poetry; played the lute; and sang well. At 16 years old she married Frances II and, thereby, became Queen of France, a time she thoroughly enjoyed. Frances II died within 2 years and Mary sadly returned to Scotland. This antique miniature is a finely painted portrait of Mary Queen of Scots. Probably a copy of a painting of her as Queen consort of France. Her por ...click for details

This scholar's desk treen is a Chinese wood study of the Taoist figure, Liu Hai, retrieving his magical three-legged toad with the Gambler's Talisman, a string of coins. The ideas for this treen originate from the 10th Century folklore and continue into the Qing Dynasty. The sculpture is filled with intertwining symbolism and advice. This Chinese treen is probably boxwood since similar sculptures are known to exist. The deep relief carving depicts the young Liu Hai on top of a mountain r ...click for details

This antique miniature painting of Marie Antoinette (en verso on frame) is done on ivory in soft pastels characteristic of Rosalba Carriera (1675-1757) trend which dominated the art form in the 18th and 19th Centuries in Europe. This portrait of Marie Antoinette is a younger French Queen than we find in later paintings by her famous portrait painter, Elisabeth Vigee-LeBrun (1755-1842). Our painting shows Marie with an elaborate coiffure and plumed hat. She is becomingly shown in a white lace-tri ...click for details

This antique bronze cast Japanese mirror with longevity motifs was probably a wedding gift made during the Edo Period (1615-1867) when such mirrors were in great demand. In Shintoism, the sun goddess, Amaterasu, commanded her grandson to descend to the land below to become its first ruler. She entrusted him with 3 objects: a mirror, a sword and a jewel. These are the Three Sacred Treasures that constitute the Imperial Regalia of Japan. After the Meiji Restoration (1868) these bronze mirrors were ...click for details

This tile is a bright polychromed copy, reputedly from Islamic architecture. The mosaic pattern is similar to faience tiles of the Blue Mosque in Tabriz, Iran. This particular tile has a deep blue ground with gold arabesque mosaic symmetrical repetitive pseudo-floral pattern. While far from a copy of the Tabriz faience mosaic panels, this tile does exhibit the profusion of ornamentation including the ogee arch arabesque surrounding the centered square mason's script design. Good art has an aesthetic appeal to the viewer. In India, perhaps more than anywhere else, religious art is meant to produce strong emotional reactions of pleasure and satisfaction. This emotional reaction is called rasa. The Art and Orchid Gallery's Indian miniature is hand painted on ivory with very fine details of a Mithuna enjoying an evening and each other with one attendant serving them. It is a romantic situation in the tradition of Krishna-Radha with erotic overtones. This is a 20th ...click for details
