Mithuna, Indian Loving Couple Miniature on Ivory
Good art has an aesthetic appeal to the viewer. In India, perhaps more than anywhere else, religious art is meant to produce strong emotional reactions of pleasure and satisfaction. This emotional reaction is called rasa. The Art and Orchid Gallery's Indian miniature is hand painted on ivory with very fine details of a Mithuna enjoying an evening and each other with one attendant serving them. It is a romantic situation in the tradition of Krishna-Radha with erotic overtones. This is a 20th Century fine art painting and shows the details adapted from the Mogul school as well as the water background using European perspective technique. However, it is overwhelmingly Indian in the romantic subject matter, the Indian representation of the female form, costumes, textile techniques and the jewel and pearl encrusted hair styles. The painted ivory is mounted on fabric with a simple gold frame under glass. It has a sturdy mount for hanging or standing alone. More description, history and references on our website. Painting size: ~ 4" H x 2 1/2"; Framed size: ~ 7 3/4" x 5 3/4"; Weight: ~ 282 grams.
