| Mary Queen of Scots was born in Scotland in 1542. She was well educated in France and spoke French, Latin and English; wrote excellent poetry; played the lute; and sang well. At 16 years old she married Frances II and, thereby, became Queen of France, a time she thoroughly enjoyed. Frances II died within 2 years and Mary sadly returned to Scotland. This antique miniature is a finely painted portrait of Mary Queen of Scots. Probably a copy of a painting of her as Queen consort of France. Her portrait here is similar (with its double lace collars, hat, and cruciform jewelry) to paintings by others including: P.Oudry, Hilliard, William and Clouet. On the frame, en verso, is Maria Stuart and the stamp for Banger Kunstausstellung (Exhibition) in the famed town of Bad Nauheim, Germany. This finely painted limning is on ivory with a convex cover and held in an ivory frame with intaglio border by a gilded brass bezel. It is excellent condition. Some of the concave ivory pieces are starting to dry. There is a brass triangle for hanging. More pictures, history and references available on our website. Size: ~ 4 3/8" H x 4" x 3/8"; Weight: ~ 86 grams | ||
