| This treen ('made from trees') is a finely sculptured image of the Chinese Taoist star god, Fu Hsing. It is mounted as a statue in a stand. However, from the back all one sees is the knotty, gnarled bent root. Upon turning the figure, we can observe Fu emerging from his root source, as a perfect combination of the popular Taoist god of good fortune and happiness coming out of the simple natural Taoist concepts.[123F] In folklore, Fu is one of the three star gods (actually the planet Jupiter) who symbolizes happiness and good fortune. The other star gods are the more famous, Shou Hsing (longevity god) and Lu Hsing (prosperity god), together denoting the three attributes of a good life.[WA, 32D] Fu Hsing is with his scroll and scholar's dress (hat). This relates to the Taoist legend of him once being Yang Cheng (a governor of Daozhou) who risked his life by writing to the Emperor requesting some relief for his suffering people.[WA] This carving is an amazing combination of natural beauty of the root and the finely detailed figure. There are some age cracks. More pictures and references on our website. Size: ~ 9 3/4" H x 3 3/4" x 2 3/4"; Weight: ~ 550 grams | ||
