Chinese Porcelain Ping (Vase) with Pure Rebus
This antique ping is precisely decorated in remarkable Famille Verte over glaze enamels dating from the Late Qing Dynasty. The designs express the pure rebus reading:" Zhu feng ping yu hung-fu" (wish to bestow upon you harmony, abundance and enormous happiness).[92B] The body of the ping has the old and popular motif of children playing wa wa[92F] in a yard just outside the house where a fan hung (iron red) colored curtain is drawn to reveal the furniture, a tea set and a stool. The father brings a whole fish out of the house which gets the boy's attention. The painting of the enamels is on mostly open white glazed space. Set inside the diaper pattern are two pairs of butterflies and fruit. The relatively long flared neck has bamboo painted in a bubbly (chicken skin) dark Famille Verte [42D, 28E] enamel and a bat in fan hung (iron red) is on the reverse side. The rebus comes from: (1) the bamboo is "zhu" (to wish); (2) the maple tree in the garden is "feng" (to bestow); (3) the vase is "ping" (harmony); (4) the fish brought by the father is "yu" (abundance); (5) the bat in iron red is "hung fu" (enormous happiness). Concerning the shape of this porcelain ping, it is typical of the high level of manual skill found among the Chinese potters of the 19th Century when "their wheel-work rarely failed to please".[92H] The old worn 'China' enameled in fan hung color, that was required by US customs Law after 1891, attests to its age.[48I] This porcelain is ~7 harness (Moh's Scale).[95J] and is translucent.
