| This large hand carved treen is of a carabao with two herd boys on his back mounted in a custom 'rice paddy' base. This sculpture appears crafted from one piece of hardwood with many undercuts and inlaid eyes and ivory teeth. This treen has age cracks which we can restore and was probably carved about 1920. It has the double symbolism of abundant harvest and fertility.[40A, 123D, 11F] The carabao is covered with hair, shown here in swirling patterns around its body. These animals must cool themselves by immersion in water. The Chinese carvers show the plasticity of their art on this piece, since it appears the herd boys are coaxing the carabao up and out of a rice paddy (the carved base). The sculpture possesses deep wood cutting and under cutting and shows notable finesse in the carving details, particularly the nostril rope; the herd boys' faces; and the carabao horns, tail and body hair patterns. There are carver's marks on the carabao, some of which match the carver's marks on the rice paddy. More pictures, information and references available on our website. Size on Base: ~ 6 1/2" H x 13 1/2" L x 5 1/2" W; Weight: ~ 4.1 pounds | ||
