Antique Kammavaca
This rare Burmese script is written with black lacquer on ruled bamboo straps. Carved gold leafed wood covers, with two holes for a binding cord, hold the artistic manuscript together. The carving is stylized overlapping lotus flowers on the surface which is raised by a mitered, beveled framed edge. The separate leaves of bamboo of this Buddhist Codex have hand calligraphy in black lacquer on five ruled lines per page. Codices on parchment and vellum are known from the 4th Century A.D.[1] Manuscripts similar to this Kammavaca date about 1000 A.D. and can be found in museums throughout the United States. It is believed they were made as gifts to Buddhist monasteries with the intention of receiving spiritual merit for its patrons.[2] References available upon request. Size: ~ 2 1/4" x 22 3/4"
