Bronze Cast Embossed Votive Candle Holder
This bronze cast votive candle holder is embossed with high relief Indian patterns. The relief designs are a warm gold color set against a dark brown ground. They copiously overlay the holder, giving the religious object a tactile feel. The devotional lamp has multiple deep relief Indian designs using several motifs typical of Indian decorative art.[147M] The decorations are separated by bars and spots; the same borders can be seen on 2nd-4th Century stone carved panels in Buddhist stupas and the 16th Century "Red Temple" of Krishna in India.[146N] A flame-in-votive design surrounds the object just below the neck. It is repeated inversely under the top. Similar patterns are found on border and column designs in palace buildings in Delhi and other Indian architecture.[147N, 146 O] Most of the motif is leaf scroll. It is beautifully depicted in ivory on the 18th Century Maharaja's Palace in Mysore, India.[146P] This lamp may have been used with tallow wax in a Buddhist temple or private shrine.
