Exemplary 19th C. Persian Suratgari Miniature
This exemplary 19th Century Persian suratgari (figural) miniature is of a regal courtyard and scenic painting with pronounced verticality. Two-sided display of lavish ornamentation in opaque colors, ink and gold on paper with balanced calligraphic boxed inserts on the front and hand painted calligraphic poem page on the opposite side. Silvered bundle-of-rods frame and mats hold the two-sided manuscript page for display.[152A] The art exhibits some characteristics that were first used in the 15th Century Timurid Period, such as, buildings decorated in patterned tiles and 'spongy' rocks at the horizon. The Safavid high baton turbans are 16th Century. Finally, the facial and costumes are distinctive of the 19th Century Qajar Dynasty.[110B, 110C, 108D, 110E, 61F] The Art and Orchid Gallery's 19th Century Persian miniature demonstrates the incredible precision line in the geometric tile work, faces, hair, turbans and arabesque floral patterns that make Qajar Dynasty painters fitting successors to the masters of the Timurid and Safavid Periods.[110G] Our suratgari miniature is not only remarkable for its finely executed minute details, showing viewers a beautiful minuscule world of some past event described in Arabic poetry but is an example of the historical connection between the visual painting and literary calligraphic poems that existed in Persia for hundreds of years. This suratgari miniature is in excellent condition (see photos) ready for display. Much more information, photos and references available on our website.
