| This jing tai lan sweetmeat box (cake box) in the Qianlong style is exemplified by an elaborate cover fashioned of high relief repousse with cabochons and tiered borders filled with true finely enameled Chinese motifs. The box sides and base are brass banded tiers of cloisonne in 18th Century opaque enamel colors and mixed colors. The top of the box cover is an elaborate high relief brass annealed on copper lotus scroll and flower motif. The cabochons, outlined by rope or flat wire, make up the flowers petals. The hardness of the cabochons has been tested to determine what minerals they are, using Mohs scale. The inside (except for the annealed copper) is counter-enameled, as is the mark-free bottom. We believe this outstanding jing tai lan sweetmeat box shows styles of the Qianlong Reign but was probably made in the 19th Century in honor of that Period.
