Exotic Turquoise & Coral Heart-Shaped Box
This exotic turquoise and coral jeweled hand wrought brass hinged sacred container was probably a Tibetan rosary box.[117AA] The top is brass filigree rope cartouche that surrounds floral and a central inlaid stone figure. The Art and Orchid Gallery's tour de force jeweled box has polished coral rice-size stones and polished turquoise round stones inlaid in brass twisted wire and rope mounts surrounding the outside of the hinged heart-shaped cover. Tibetans have exhibited such craftsmanship with inlaid stones like turquoise in metal Pacific deities[179A] and ancient masks.[179B, 117C] They also use these bright contrasting blue and coral colors in their sacred art.[117D] Similar stone inlaid art with filigree metals can be found in the surrounding countries of Nepal and China.[145E, asiantf, 74G] The center of the box cover has the relief image in coral, turquoise and wrought brass of a Bodhisattva, or a priest, in jeweled robes and a tall 3-pointed hat. He exhibits a mudra hand gesture and has a carved coral face. There are 6 eight-petal turquoise flowers on the sides and top. Brass filigree decoration fills in between the stone mounts on the cover and sides. There are hundreds of stones hand mounted in rope holders. Wrought aged brass can be seen inside and on the bottom of the box. There are several (3) replaced stones. The box was cleaned. References available upon request. Size: ~ 1 1/2" H x 4" x 4 1/4"; Weight: ~ 142 grams
