French Antique Cobalt Blue Glass Boite-A-Rouge
This round boite-a-rouge (box for rouge) has a pierced brass-a-cage mount over carved cobalt blue glass.[84A, 97B] This vanity objet de vertu shows a hand painted miniature of a lady on blue glass in a floral brass chased mount, French school.[97C] The remainder of the hinged cover is a machine spiral pattern on which four brass appliques, made of cartouche scroll and flower arrangements, have been annealed. This is typical of French ornamentation which mimics their 18th Century famous gold ormolu snuff boxes.[84A] Before the mid-19th Century, the French banned the use of poisonous mercury and used gold colored brass (copper-zinc alloy) for their metal mounts.[Wd] The top is held together by three fillets of brass dots. the cover is soldered to the brass hinge support which has an elaborate clasp cast as ribbons and scroll. The body of the box is cobalt blue glass with a ground 12-point star on the bottom. The glass is in a cage mount, mostly removable, of brass festooned with ribbons holding baskets of flowers and fruit. This produces a brilliant contrast of cobalt against gold. The interior contains a beveled mirror brass mounted in the cover. The mirror has several small age spots and the brass was restored. It is a finely made French antique boite-a-rouge with a hand painted miniature in very good condition. References available upon request. Size: ~ 2 3/4" H x 4 1/4"; Weight: ~ 570 grams
