| The Art and Orchid Gallery's hand painted miniature in an elaborate frame was done in 1957 by Bogota. It appears to be a portrait of a blue-eyed, blond boy named Thoret. He is well dressed in white shirt, red bow tie, and green herringbone jacket. The painting was done on an oval disk and mounted in an elaborate gilded frame with ribbon cartouche appliques and old Greek dot-and-dash inner molding.[152A] To preserve its excellent condition, the miniature and gilded frame was mounted inside a green velvet lined, carved wooden shadow box. It has been resealed several times during the last 55 years. This fine portrait miniature in its elaborate frame, follows in the traditional art of such, starting in the 16th Century, which developed from illustrating manuscripts centuries earlier.[8B, 182C, 153D] The daguerreotype (early type of photography) began to replace portrait miniatures in the late 19th Century. Pseudo portraits or copies of paintings of famous women are still produced today on bone or ivory in countries like Germany.[AOG-304] With today's computer searching techniques, it is possible to locate the elderly Thoret and return his handsome child portrait. We cleaned the frame and resealed the box. References available upon request. Painting Size: ~ 3 1/2" H x 1 5/8"; Shadow Box Size: ~ 6 1/4" H x 5 3/8" x 1 1/4"; Weight: ~ 240 grams | ||
