Tibetan Calligraphy Brush made w Copper, Silver, Brass
THe Art and Orchid Gallery's writing/painting instrument was handcrafted in Tibet of the three metals: copper, silver and brass plus animal hair brush (maybe goat) and wood. These are the same metals frequently combined by Tibetans to make decorative and ritualistic objects like the 'mani', or prayer wheel (AOG-309, 187A, 162B); 'gau', or portable shrines [189C, 162D] ; and censers (AOG428). Buddhism spread east from India to China through Tibet. Today the Buddhist religion is part of the core of Tibetan life and runs every aspect of it.[117E] There are three Buddhist realms of existence: the spiritual plane; the verbal plane; and the physical plane. This mixed metal encased calligraphy brush depicts symbols for these three planes of Buddhist existence. The end of the handle is a 'stupa'. or burial mound for relics of Buddha; it represents the spiritual plane. The brush itself is for painting words (the verbal plane) or paint images (the physical plane).[187F] Also the three prong pattern embossed in silver pointing in opposite directions between the two brass rings is another representation of the three Buddhist realms.[187G] A Chinese motif of the dragon bites the copper sleeve which hold the animal bristles. The three metals are stamped, incised with burin, hammer and punch tools to give these designs. The calligraphy brush is in excellent condition with multiple patinas and soldered together over a wood base. References available upon request. Size: ~ 18" L x 1 3/4"; Weight: ~ 180 grams;
