Blue Coral
This blue coral, Heliopora coerulea, is the only known octocoral to produce a massive skeleton. The skeleton is of aragonite, a form of calcite crystallizing in the orthorhombic system. It is common in shallow reefs of the Indo-Pacific including the Ryukyu Islands of southwest Japan, the Coral Sea in northeast Australia and American Samoa. The largest blue colony in the world is thought to be off the southwest coast of Japan. Due to its unusual blue color and being fairly tolerant of conditions, it can be used in tropical aquariums. References available upon request. There are 2 other specimens available, one larger and one smaller than this one. This specimen can also be mounted on the lamp base as shown in the photo. Be inquire. Size: ~ 11" H x 6"; Weight: ~ 1137 grams
