Signed Japanese Studio Art Cha Wan
The Art and Orchid Gallery's cha wan, or tea bowl, was made in Japan by Izumi Takashi.[3AA, DEA] The artist's impressed mark is found just above the unglazed, stained foot rim extending into the glazed bowl. The piece is Studio Art, made of stoneware (hardness of 7 on Mohs scale) and hand over glazed enameled with gold trims and fill.[33B, 97C] Studio pottery, or Artist pottery, is rooted in the Western protest against industrialization, starting in the mid-19th Century. One can say it is a combination of artistic creativity with artisan productivity, an alternative to the Machine Age, or factory product.[196D] For example, this artistic cha wan is wheel thrown and combines under glazed bisque toning in pink on a brown bowl with multiple low temperature enamel over glaze painting; finally, gilding in a small muffle kin. The ornamentation is an 'ushi' ( Japanese for ox) pulling a Treasure Cart in rich looking imperial red and black enamels with abundant gilding.[197E] The cha wan is covered inside and outside in a small angular crackle glaze with brown crack staining similar to Satsuma ware.[3F] The foot is stained brown and unglazed, typical of Japanese ceramics. Our Studio Art cha wan is in excellent condition. It is 20th Century. References available upon request. Size: ~ 3" H x 4 7/8"; Weight: ~ 205 grams;
