| The Art and Orchid Gallery's figural limnings are hand painted with incredible precision of curved forms (see enlarged photos). The hair, facial contours, leaf veins and clothing details are best appreciated under magnification. The artist used soft pastel enamels like the famed Italian miniaturist, Rosalba Carriera, initiated in the 17-18th Centuries.[44A] Our set of four limnings are not portraits as was the custom for that period, but are fanciful painting from "Les Mille et Une Nuit", that is, 'The Thousand and One Nights' Arabic stories translated into French by Antoine Gallard and first appearing in Paris in 1704.[179B] It is believed that Gallard's well told fables originally came from Persia, India and Arabia. Some of those tales were the familiar 'Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves' stories, some of which are depicted in our fine paintings. Other miniatures found in Persian manuscripts of the Mid-Qajar Period (1795-1925) of these Arabian Nights stories, painted by Sani-ol Molk are known.[110E] All of our paintings in this set are signed (see photo) on the front; two list Ali Baba under the signatures. They are handsomely double mounted and in gold antiqued frames, ready for hanging. We date them 1920's or later. They have been re-mounted at least once. The exceptionally fine paintings are on celluloid, not ivory, and are in very good or better condition (a few leaves have lost gilding) References available upon request.
