| The Art and Orchid Gallery's 'commesso', the Italian word used to describe mosaics made of hard stone like marble, is a translucent light yellowish-green stone dish inlaid with four stone types [97A, 97B]; blue, pink, brown and violet polished stone slices in the shape of leaves and flowers. They are depicted on a simple black enameled stem. the commesso is probably Italian and made of types of marble. The tradition goes back to Roman Times; then, was revived in mid-16th Century Italy. Combinations of paintings and hard stone mosaics, as on our dish, are referenced from the 17th C. Italian work.[97C] We estimate it to be 20th Century. The plate has some scratches but it has its inlaid stones intact and there are no cracks. References available upon request. Size: ~ 6" in diameter; Weight: ~ 310 grams | ||
