| The Art and Orchid Gallery's limnings, or miniature paintings, are the quintessence of 'email des peintres', that is, enamels painted on plaques.[8A, 13B] These miniatures display radiant luminosity through the predominant use of 'a jour' enameling, i.e. transparent enamels which exploits the shine of the underlying metals.[13C] Various degrees of chromatic intensity from light of the setting summer skies reflect in pink skin tones of the figures, flowing water, and satiny dress styles of the 18th Century. This effect is held in contrast by opaque multi-colored enamels of the florals, shading and outlines in the limnings. The themes of these email des peintres are the common court life inspired 'jardin d'amour', or lovers in a garden.[13F] Our Gamet enameled miniatures also contain the figures of ladies in waiting, putto and animals around the central pair of lovers. The jardin, of course, contains fountains, flora and landscape with chiaroscuro.[73G, 60H] Our skillfully enameled limnings are mounted ready for hanging in double copper reed and leaf frames with mats of either incised ivory or pressed tortoise shell.[8 I] A Gamet signature is found in the lower right corner of each miniature, and the characteristic newsprint (this time in French) is on the back. Generally, Gamet signed paintings on metals and ceramics, and they are considered Fin de Siecle, that is, end of the 19th Century. [WSR] Size: ~ 4 1/2" H x 5" x 1/2"; Weight: ~ 375 grams; | ||
