Boy and His Dog (1875) Oil on plate 8 1/2" x 6 1/2" w/o frame, 16 3/4" x 14 3/4" w/ frame Little is known about this 19th century British artist however this has not prevented his work from becoming not only greatly admired but also increasingly valuable as is evident by the artists powerful auction records. Mulready was a genre artist and seems to have been fond of children as they were often the subject of his pieces. His subjects evoke a sense of serenity and gentility. The settings were typically street scenes and oddly he often included type-set printing somewhere in the composition whether in a poster, newspaper or billboard. This piece contains all these elements. Mulready had a son that was also an artist with similar appeal. This piece, signed and dated en verso, is truly a gem and was painted on a copper plate which during the artists lifetime was not unusual.
