Pair of Chancay/Huacho Wooden Painted Figures

Peru, Chancay, ca. 800-1200 CE. These Chancay/Huacho figures, carved from wood, painted in red and black, and adorned with gauze turbans and textile wraps covering their bodies save where anatomy is exposed (as Andean artisans are known for their textile production) represent a male and a female. Clearly the artisans employed a more primitive carving technique relative to the more advanced textile technique; however, the Huacho culture emphasized the communicative and symbolic power of these figures. Each approximately 14-1/2"T. Generally excellent condition with left leg of broken and female's right leg about a half inch shorter than her left. .

Provenance: Ex-Collection of Derek Robinson, UK, Ex Stoddart Coll, Oakton, VA, acquired late 1960s.

Authenticity guaranteed.
