Middle East, Iran, Luristan culture, ca. 1200-900 BCE. Luristan bronzes form a distinct body of metalwork characterized by a wide variety of idiosyncratic forms and a highly stylized abstract conceptualization of animal and human representation. This bronze cast axe head features a long downward sloping blade that resolves to a cylindrical shaft adorned with reliefs of four serpent-like creatures whose heads form the four spikes. Exquisite! Measures 6 1/2" (16.5 cm) long x 2 3/4" (7 cm) high.

Condition: One old chip to end of blade. Normal oxidation. Nice patina!

Provenance: Ex-Andrew Green collection, Ex-David Kennedy collection, acquired at London Art Market in late 1980's
