Ancient Rome, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. You don't find one of these every day. A stunning Roman bronze lock mechanism demonstrating a high degree of artistry and technique. One side shows a raised metal "loop" incised with a stylized, abstract geometric design. The other side features six applied conelike forms incised with striations, the central one upon a small circular medallion, with a T-shaped key hole beside it. Circular bands frame each circular face or plate, and in between we have an encircling band adorned with a zigzag motif. The entire piece has aged beautifully boasting a gorgeous green patina. Plus, I have never seen an ancient Roman lock mechanism in its entirety. Typically you only find one of the plates or sections. Really rare! Size: 2.125" W at widest x 1.375" H (5.4 cm x 3.5 cm)

Condition: Small loss to one conelike appendage. Overall excellent with beautiful patina.

Provenance: Ex-Sarkisian Gallery, Denver, Colorado, acquired in the 1950's, Displayed, Denver Art Museum (1960's)
