Stunning example... Ancient Roman Bronze Crossbow Brooch, ca. 3rd to 4th century A.D. Decorative piece of ancient ornamentation in the form of an archer's crossbow, fibulas such as these were ornamental pins that the ancient Romans (and their predecessors, the Greeks and Minoans) used to pin folds of their tunics and cloaks so clothing stayed where it belonged (forerunner of our modern safety pin). Often times you may see depictions of fibula in the portrait of a Roman Emperor on coinage - especially that of the third and fourth centuries. Though not necessarily so, it probably belonged to a Roman Legionnaire, perhaps a Centurion (a battalion commander). Original sliding locking mechanism secures the pin (complete, but frozen in place). 2-3/4"L x 2"W x 1-1/4"D, intact/in generally excellent condition, save loss of patina on reverse from digger's excavation tool. PROVENANCE: Ex-private French Collection. LIFETIME AUTHENTICITY GUARANTEE |
