From Toraja-Sulawesi Island, Indonesia, ca. late 19th / early 20th century. Ceremonial fish-tail spoon (sendok), made of lightweight wood with original black pigment. Nice, aged patina. Custom stand. Spoon itself measures 6-1/2"L x 1-1/2"W, intact/generally excellent condition, save minor edge wear, as shown. The geographically four-pronged island of Sulawesi lies next to the Thousand Islands of the Moluccas, the fabled spice islands of history. Mostly covered in forest, Sulawesi is less developed than the rest of Indonesia and still has a mainly agricultural based economy. The Toraja people still build their traditional boat-shaped houses on wood platforms, and practice the animist traditions and rituals of their ancestors whilst acknowledging Christianity. the Toraja are renowned for their elaborate funeral ceremonies and burial sites in cliffside caves. PROVENANCE: Ex-private Southwestern Collection. |
