Miniature Holy Land Pilgrim's Flask
Cute! Ancient Terracotta Pilgrim's Flask from the Holyland, First to Second Crusades, ca. 11th to 12th century A.D. Pottery vessel in miniature form, soft orange slip, domed-like body on either side, short conical neck with rounded hollowed flaring mouth, flanked by two arched strap-like handles. Typically carried by travelers and pilgrims, these small flasks were obtained at holy sites to carry home water or oil from the lamps burning in the sanctuaries visited. 2-1/4"H x 1-7/8"W, intact/generally very good condition, save minor lip roughness and surface encrustation.
