Nicely carved with a winding planet ornament surrounding a group of hieroglyphs representing breads and water lines. The scarab belongs to the group of Anra-scarabs which are typical for the Hyksos period. In this epoch, hieroglyphs were carved in scarabs because of the magical powers which were assigned to them.

The Hyksos first appeared in Egypt during the eleventh dynasty, began their climb to power in the thirteenth dynasty, and came out of the second intermediate period in control of Avaris and the Delta. By the fifteenth dynasty, they ruled Lower Egypt, and at the end of the seventeenth dynasty, they were expelled.
