Lacquer screen with famille rose figures and carved stand
Tongzhi period, Qing dynasty
Hardwood, lacquer, and porcelain with famille rose enamels
H: 55 cm W: 34.5 cm
Perfect condition; some expected age wear on the enamels
From a private collection in Asheville, North Carolina
I've never seen a second. Huge screen made from excellent and sturdy hardwood. Decorated with lacquer and painted landscape, while the figures are made from famille rose porcelain. Imagine the work that went in the creation of this screen: first the porcelain figures would be shaped and high-fired, enameled and low-fired a second time; then the screen carved and lacquered; finally the stand would be carved out hollow with intricate decorations. This screen must have once adorned the household of a rich noble or merchant during the late Qing.
