Late 19th century
Guangxu Period, Qing Dynasty
Porcelain with overglaze famille verte enamels
H: 44.6 cm / 17.6 in
From a Marine County, California estate

An extremely finely painted 19th century rouleau vase, enameled in the Kangxi famille verte tradition. The image illustrated is one known to exist since the 5-7th centuries, commonly entitled “Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove” (zhulin qixian). Shown in casual garbs in a bamboo groove, the seven sages represent historical figures who have turned their back to politics in pursuit of private interests–a Chinese parallel to the Voltarian “but let us cultivate our garden.”

Condition report: Lamp hole neatly drilled to bottom, some fritting to mouth rim, 1 cm short glaze line (does NOT effect body) to inner rim [Please examine all photos carefully; they are part of the condition report.]
