Tongzhi – Guangxu period, Qing dynasty
Porcelain with overglaze famille rose enamels
D: 22.7 cm, H: 16.1 cm
From a Carmel, CA estate

A large late Qing yellow-ground famille rose covered box, gorgeously decorated in famille rose with a mature peach tree rising from a rock amongst rolling waves. Large famille rose boxes such as this one were popularly used to hold cakes and treats during celebrations. This particular box was likely made for a birthday event, as its “peaches amongst ocean waves” theme carries wishes for longevity and is very similar to imperial “birthday” dishes made since the Yongzheng era. Though unmarked, the use of a yellow-ground, decorative motifs, and quality of this box suggest it once belonged to a wealthy or noble family.

A pair of boxes with peaches against a white ground sold at Christie’s for $10,625 (sale 2667 lot 141).

Condition: basically perfect— just one small shallow chip to the box edge [Please view all pictures carefully, as they are part of the condition report.]
