18th Century, Rare Burmese Soapstone Crowned Buddha

Rare Burmese soapstone crowned Buddha, or sometimes known as 'King Buddha', wearing a diadem-crown and jeweled ornaments of a king instead of ordinary monk's robe. Crowned buddha represents the Buddha's role as a universal sovereign.

The buddha is seated on a throne in Mara Vijaya (calling the earth to witness) posture. The right hand is in the gesture of touching the earth, the left hand in the gesture of meditation.

The buddha wears royal jewellery of which particularly the breast-piece and ornamental bands on the shoulders, elbows, and knees.

Age: Burma, Shan period, circa 18th Century
Measurement: Height 37 C.M. / Width 18.5 C.M. (size excluding black stand)
