18th Century, Rare Burmese Tai Lue Wooden Buddha

Rare Burmese Tai Lue wooden buddha sitting in Mara Vijaya (calling the earth to witness) posture on a base, with meditative facial expression, original traces of lacquer and gilding remaining.

Top of the head is a stupa-shaped "flame" or called usnisa, symbol of the realization of Nirvana or indicative of supreme knowledge.

Tai Lue is a tribal people living in Burma. It is difficult to find buddha from this ethnic group. Tai Lue buddhas look more primitive than typical Burmese buddhas.

Age: Burma, Shan period, circa 18th Century
Measurement: Height 49.8 C.M. / Width 21.3 C.M.
