Korean TOMB GUARDIAN HEAD 9th C. (?) Granite
Offered here is TOMB GUARDIAN HEAD from Korea. It probably dates to the Unified Silla period (ca. 9th century). Carved from a very coarse grain granite, it shows years and years of wear from the elements, as the facial features are worn and the large square hat had much pitting in the surface. Probably the head came off a rather columnar guardian figure, the type placed around the base of important political and royal tombs in South Korea, near Kyoungju. I acquired it from an American friend who lived in Korea from 1959-1980. He shipped it to the US in the 1960's and I bought it in 1985 or so. It is very heavy, but probably can be shipped if anyone is interested. The condition is fairly good, considering the age, but the nose has been partially chipped away, and the entire surface and facial features have softened from the years of exposure. The head measures 10 inches in height and is approximately 7 X 7 inches in width and depth.
