Korean or Chinese BRUSH HOLDER of bamboo, 19th C.
Offered here is a scholar's desk object, a BRUSH HOLDER, carved from a section of bamboo. The scene on the exterior is of a fisherman who is fishing from a boat which is floating in water among some river reeds. The waves and the reeds continue around the piece. It was probably made during the late 19th century. The fisherman's hat is very similar in shape to Korean horse-hair hats worn by scholar's during the Choson period, thus my attribution to Korea. (Although it may well have been made in China.) It is not signed, nor does it have a seal, but the carving is of high quality. The exterior surface has not been stained or covered with any kind oil, so it is a light color of brown. There are signs of years of wear (ink stains and dirt) on the base and in the interior (see photos). The condition of the piece is very good; there are only some slight surface cracks around the base of the piece. There are no cracks in the base or in the interior. The piece measures 4 3/4 inches in diameter and is 6 1/2 inches in height.
