Indian 19th C. Painted and Dyed Cotton SKIRT CLOTH
Offered here is a very large, nearly complete, KAIN SEMBAGI or SKIRT CLOTH probably made in Tamilnadu, India for the Sri Lankan or Javanese market during the late 19th century. With rows of saw-tooth tumpals at one red end, it is mostly composed of stripes with arrow-shaped patches in alternating colors of light purple, light blue, light maroon, red and pink. Scrolling red flowers on pale ground are in the end border, with tumpals, and along the side borders. The condition is generally good; with numerous small holes and a cut along one edge in several places and at one end. It measures 135 X 46.25 inches. Such Indian export cloth is quite rare in the marketplace.
