| Offered here is a very fine Korean COVERED JAR made during the 18th or 19th century. Jars such as these were made as utilitarian wares for use in the kitchen, where they stored food and condiments. It has a bold, squat shape with multi-faceted sides. The glaze is thick and black. It runs down over the surface creating dark and light areas, most pronounced on the edges of the facets. The base is covered with small gravel from the firing. The lid is intact and in mint condition. It has an incised wavy design around the sloping side of the top. Typically Korean, when the jar is placed on a flat surface it lists slightly to one side. The condition is good, but there are several cracks; one extending down from the mouth rim and a few in the interior base of the piece. The diameter of the mouth is 3 3/4 inches. The widest diameter of the body is 8 inches. The overall height is 7 1/2 inches. This beautiful jar is a rare survivor and should appeal strongly to potters (and others), who have long admired the skill and charm of Korean ceramics. | |||||||||||||
